Thoughtfully designed exterior lighting is essential in public spaces—especially where stairs, elevation changes, and pedestrian safety intersect. At the McMillan Community Center and Park in Washington, DC, handrail-integrated LED puck lighting delivers a clean, modern solution that balances performance, durability, and architectural intent.  LEDScape Lighting supplied LM18  handrail LED puck luminaires for this project, working closely with our local representative, Chesapeake Lighting, as well as the project’s lighting and landscape design teams, to ensure the solution met both technical and aesthetic goals.

A Collaborative Design Approach

Successful public-space lighting requires close coordination across disciplines. For the McMillan project,Chesapeake worked with the lighting designers, whose team carefully evaluated pedestrian circulation, stair geometry, and nighttime visibility requirements. Landscape architecture was provided by Rhodeside & Harwell, Inc. (Alexandria, VA), whose site design integrates circulation, topography, and lighting into a cohesive user experience. This collaborative approach allowed handrail-integrated lighting to become a seamless part of the site—supporting safety, wayfinding, and architectural clarity without introducing visual clutter.  The McMillan site features long, multi-tiered concrete stairways, ramps, and elevated walkways connecting multiple elevations throughout the park. In environments like this, traditional pole-mounted or wall-mounted fixtures alone often struggle to provide consistent step illumination without creating glare, light pollution or uneven lighting.   For these reasons, LED handrail provides an excellent solution,  by keeping light focused on the apporpriate surfaces.

LED Puck Spacing: 2-Foot Centers in a Real-World Application

One of the most common questions we receive from architects, engineers, and contractors is: “What is the recommended spacing for handrail LED pucks?” The McMillan Community Center and Park provides a clear, real-world example. On this project, handrail LED pucks were installed on 2-foot centers, resulting in:

  • Uniform illumination along extended stair runs
  • Consistent visual rhythm and intuitive wayfinding
  • Reduced shadowing between steps
  • Balanced light levels without over-illumination

While spacing can vary depending on lumen output, mounting height, and ambient conditions, this project demonstrates how 2-foot-on-center spacing can be highly effective for large civic and pedestrian environments.

Contractor-Friendly Installation, Built for Longevity

From an electrical contractor’s perspective, handrail LED puck lighting simplifies installation.  At LEDScape, we can provide the entire solution including the handrail, or we can provide the LED pucks only, making these pucks a great solution for new and retrofit construction.   This approach also allows flexibility when determining cost centers for handrail and for the lighting. The fixtures supplied for McMillan were engineered for demanding outdoor and public-use conditions, featuring:

  • Corrosion-resistant housings suitable for exterior stainless-steel handrails
  • Low-profile optics that maintain handrail ergonomics and ADA compliance
  • Tight beam control to minimize glare and light trespass
  • Long-term reliability for municipal infrastructure

Remote  24V power supplies and routing power through the handrail system also reduces exposed conduit, resulting in a cleaner installation and fewer coordination challenges in the field.

LEDScape LED Handrail Lighting  is a versatile solution

Our handrail LED puck fixtures and linear handrail lighting solutions are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of public infrastructure while maintaining the refined aesthetics expected in high-end architectural environments. Built with durable, corrosion-resistant materials and designed for continuous, low-maintenance operation, these fixtures perform reliably in parks, campuses, transit areas, and other high-traffic public spaces. At the same time, their clean profiles, controlled optics, and uniform illumination make them equally well suited for luxury hotels, theaters, cultural venues, and upscale mixed-use developments. By delivering glare-controlled, integrated lighting that enhances safety without compromising design intent, LEDScape handrail lighting solutions bridge the gap between rugged performance and architectural elegance—allowing designers to specify one system across a wide range of applications with confidence.
